Jean-Honoré Fragonard

French · 1732–1806 · Rococo

Jean-Honoré Fragonard was one of the last great painters of the French Rococo. Born in Grasse, the town of perfume, he trained with Chardin and Boucher and won the Prix de Rome in 1752. He became famous for playful, sensual scenes such as The Swing, and painted more than five hundred pictures full of light, movement and quick, joyful brushwork.

After the French Revolution his graceful style went out of fashion. He died in Paris in 1806, almost forgotten – and was rediscovered in the nineteenth century as one of the most brilliant painters France ever had.
